The View From Above

Little dogs – I’m thinking Maltese, Chihuahuas, and Yorkies, get carried around a lot.

Guys do this, too, by the way.

We coo. We sputter endearments. We kiss tiny apple heads. We inhale deeply of fragrant doggy aromas.

And what does the object of our affection think of being suddenly levitated off terra firma?

As always, each dog will have a different response to being picked up:

“Shoot. Here we go again.

“Let’s see what this lady had for dinner. I’ll give her mouth a few licks. Aha! Sausage pizza!”

“Grrr. Put me down. Now. Seriously.”

“Yes! Love me! Pet me! I'm in heaven!

“Whatever you do, hang on tight. Don’t drop me like that kid did last week.”

“Good. Now I can bark in your face. And that guy’s face, too.”

“No, thank you. Really. Put me down now. I’m wiggling for a reason.”

“Are there treats up here?”

“I’m the King of the World!”

Unlike the view from down below, our dogs don’t choose to be hoisted, feet dangling precariously, totally dependent on the giant that is a human being to keep them safe.

Many dogs feel out of control when picked up – by adults OR children. The only way they can indicate to us how uncomfortable they are is to squirm, bark, growl, even snap or bite.

Let’s remember that dogs, even the smallest ones,

have four legs and the ability to stand on them.
