Pet Peeves

Times Union writer Kristi Gustafson often blogs about the major and minor annoyances of daily life. With a nod of appreciation for her spot-on observances and ascerbic wit, here a few of my dog world grievances:

1. Retractable leashes, also know as the Flexi-Leash. Whose inane idea was it to reward dogs for pulling? Not to mention the searing pain of that cord should it wrap around your shin.

2. “Dog-friendly” apartment complexes that really aren’t. You know, the ones that have no poopbag stations, no wastebaskets for poop, and paper thin walls so neighbors can hear every woof and whine.

3. Owners that let their dogs off-leash in neighborhoods. Guys, its not legal and its scary to every responsible dog owner who does have their dog on-leash.

4. Dog food commercials that promote colorful “chef-prepared” food that is mostly ground corn.

5. Buying a dog on the Internet, and having it shipped to you. When there are so many dogs right here in the Capit

al Region that need homes, why go looking for your new best friend anywhere else?

6. People who have never actually met a pitbull but think they are all dangerous and aggressive. That’s called profiling.

7. Cars driven by people with a dog on their laps. You KNOW they love their pets, so why are they putting their dogs’ lives in jeopardy?

8. Dog chew sticks and other treats that are made in China but have the American flag on the package.  If you see m

e in the pet supply store aisle with my reading glasses on, you’ll know what I’m doing. And that reminds me, I especially despise….

9. Pet stores that sell puppies. Pet stores should only sell pet supplies, and hold adoption clinics for homeless animals. Puppies sold in pet stores are from puppy mills. You are NOT rescuing a dog when you buy one from a store.

 10. Dogs that come into the house soaking wet from the rain, take one look at the towel I have lovingly held out to receive a dripping paw, and take off running
