(Don’t) Take Me With You

Does anyone else find this to be a tough time of year for their dogs?

Here we humans go, sailing out the door – to our jobs, to the beach, to the park, to the mall. And we have to leave our dogs at home.

“Ahhhh, man!” their eyes implore us, “Don’t leave me home again. C’mon, I’ll be good!”

But….it’s just too damn hot.

Even walks with the dog are shortened. We glisten with sweat, our companion doggedly pants, and by the time we get home, human and dog alike slump onto the cool floor, eyes closed in relief, chests heaving.

Car rides are out of the question, since stopping – even for a moment to run an errand – is fraught with danger.

What’s a dog (and dog owner) to do?

Here are some recipes, with your dog as the first ingredient:

Cool Canine Soup

Drag the kiddie pool outside. Place in a shady spot. Add water. Float dog’s favorite toys in it. For reluctant dogs, place front paws in the water. Dogs sweat through their foot pads, so this will be instantly refreshing.

Ocean Spray Cocktail

Turn on the sprinkler. Stir in dog. Encourage gleeful, soggy play.

Piggy in a Blanket

Soak an old t-shirt in cool water.  Dress dog in shirt. Resist dog’s attempts to retain dignity. She’ll thank you later.

Cocktail Frank

Up the ante and make a fashion statement by purchasing a Cool Vest or a Cooling Bandana.

Bahama Breeze

Place oscillating fan on a table. Fill a metal pan with ice cubes and water. Direct fan wind across the pan. Aim on grateful dog.

H2O Straight-Up

Always keep a large bowl of fresh water – with or without ice cubes – available for your dog at all time.

Frozen Mojito

Two words: air conditioning.
