A Messy Business

Dogs are a messy business.

If you are a meticulous introvert who strives for order and sanitized surfaces, you probably do not have a dog.

And then there are the rest of us.

Regardless of how well-behaved your dog is, you will come home one day and find a puddle (or pond, depending on the size of the culprit) of doggie urine in an inconvenient location, i.e., you will step in it.

Guaranteed your dog will ingest something foul and puke it up in the dining room. He will, most certainly, endure a seemingly endless bout of diarrhea, usually on the carpeted stairs. He will drool, shed, fling mud from his coat, upend his water dish, and transport his moistened dog chow from his bowl to the safe confines under your kitchen table.

I’m not an expert, although I believe in being prepared for the inevitable. Paper towels and a pile of rags are in the cabinets under every sink in my house. For spot cleaning, I know enough not to attempt to use vinegar, Lysol, or pine cleaner on dog-created messes, which just cover up the smell. Only an enzyme-based cleaner will remove the stain AND the odor.  Remember your dog will return to any place that has his familiar fragrance on, so fight this battle with a cleaner that will break down and permanently remove the problem. I’m thinking Buster’s Secret or Nature’s Miracle or Urine Gone.

Better yet, hire a pro. For whole house cleaning, I’m a fan of EcoMaids. They send a professional crew over, scour your rooms from top to bottom, and clean with only non-toxic cleaning products that are safe for use around pets. In fact, one lucky BARK! reader will receive a FREE initial cleaning service.  A runner-up will get a $50 EcoMaids gift card.

Here’s what to do:

Post a comment describing your worst dog-related cleaning disaster and I will select the most entertaining one to receive the EcoMaids offer.
